7 Essential Items for Disney World You Cannot Forget

7 Essential Items for Disney World You Cannot Forget

Disney World days are long — typically 12+ hours on your feet in Florida heat. What’s in your bag determines whether you end the day exhausted but happy, or miserable and sunburned. Here are the 7 things we tell every single client to bring.

1. A Refillable Water Bottle

Hydration is everything. Orlando in summer hovers between 90-100°F (32-38°C) with humidity that makes it feel hotter. Disney has free water stations throughout all parks, and the refillable bottle cuts your spending dramatically. A 32oz bottle with an insulated sleeve keeps your water cold for hours.

Skip: Buying bottled water inside the park at $4 a pop.

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes (Broken In)

Not new shoes. Broken-in shoes. Disney World guests average 8-12 miles of walking per park day. New shoes will blister you by noon. Wear your hiking shoes or running shoes that you’ve already put miles on.

Our recommendation: Shoes with arch support and thick soles. Sandals are fine for shorter visits but suffer on long days.

3. A Poncho (Not an Umbrella)

Florida afternoon thunderstorms are daily events in summer — usually 30-45 minutes of heavy rain, then sunshine again. A compact poncho takes up almost no bag space and keeps you dry without dealing with a bulky umbrella on crowded paths.

Insider tip: Buy ponchos before you arrive. Inside Disney parks they sell for $12-18 each. A pack of 10 on Amazon costs less than one park poncho.

4. Portable Phone Charger (Powerbank)

The My Disney Experience app runs constantly. Mobile ordering, Lightning Lane, PhotoPass, wait times — your phone is working all day. A 10,000mAh powerbank will fully charge most phones twice over and fits easily in a daypack.

Look for: Dual USB-A/USB-C ports so the whole family can charge simultaneously.

5. Sunscreen (SPF 50+)

Theme park visitors routinely underestimate Florida sun exposure. Even on cloudy days, UV levels are intense. Apply before you arrive at the park and reapply every 2 hours — especially critical if you’re going on water rides.

Tip: Face sticks are mess-free and great for kids who won’t cooperate with spray.

6. Snacks from the Hotel

Disney food is excellent. It’s also expensive. A $6 granola bar from your hotel breakfast bar can replace a $12 Mickey pretzel mid-morning and let you save the budget for the real meals. Pack:

  • Protein bars or nuts
  • Fruit pouches for kids
  • Crackers or trail mix

You’re allowed to bring outside food into Disney parks (no glass containers, no alcohol).

7. A Small First Aid Kit

Blisters happen. Headaches happen. Kids scrape their knees. Pack a small travel kit with:

  • Adhesive bandages (multiple sizes)
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Moleskin for blisters
  • Antihistamine (bee stings, unexpected reactions)

Disney parks have First Aid stations, but they’re out of the way and the lines can be long during peak hours.

Bonus: The App Itself

Before you arrive, spend 30 minutes inside the My Disney Experience app. Set up mobile ordering at a restaurant you plan to visit, check wait times so you understand how they work, and link your Lightning Lane selections if you have them. The more familiar you are with the app, the less time you lose figuring it out inside the park.
